New Garbage & Recycling FAQs
Trash pickup is changing. Each residence should have two new 96 gallon carts – one for trash (all blue) and one for recycling (green top). Here are some frequently asked questions to assist in understanding our new service.

Why are we changing? I liked the old way better.
There are two main reasons for this change:  First, like most cities across the nation, Portland is adopting a more automated pickup system that saves fuel, is safer for waste service workers, and saves our citizens money with a lower monthly utility bill.  Secondly, we believe in smart recycling when it can help reduce the use of our natural resources.  New ways to sort and process recyclable materials continue to improve the recycle industry.  Republic Services, our trash contractor, operates a state-of-the-art sorting facility in Corpus Christi that uses "single stream" technology.  Residents of Corpus Christi have been successfully participating in this recycling program for several years.

How often will my trash and recycling be picked up?
The trash pickup is once per calendar week.  Recycling is picked up every other week.

I have a lot of trash.  Can I order an extra cart?
Yes, residents are able to receive an additional trash cart for an additional $12.79 per month. If you would like to receive an additional cart, please contact the Utility Billing department at (361) 777-4500

What are my new trash days? Which week is my recycling?
When the new carts were delivered, each had a packet taped to the top with information specific to your address.  The packet contains what day trash will be picked up and which week recycling will be picked up.

Are we allowed to put limbs in the trash?
Yes, residents may put limbs, grass, and other items in their trash can so long as the lid will still close.

Do we need to do anything special to the recycling items?
All recycling should be placed in the blue cart with the green lid. The only special requirement is that plastic and metal containers should be rinsed out before being placed in the cart. We do not recycle glass.

Does the new schedule affect the bulk/heavy brush pickup?
No, the new schedule is for regular trash and recycling pickup only. Areas for bulk/brush have not changed, nor has the schedule. Check the brush pickup schedule to see what days are scheduled for your neighborhood.

When will I get my container?
The containers are being delivered the last two weeks of July. If you have not received your containers by August 1, 2012, please call Republic Services at (361) 882-1878.

What happens if my container is damaged or stolen?
If your container is damaged or stolen please call the Police Department at 361-777-4444 to report the vandalism or theft.  Your cart(s) can be replaced after a police report is filed by calling Public Works at (361) 777-4601.

Will my utility bill change?
Yes, we have upgraded our service to residents to include a more efficient service that includes trash receptacles and the best part is residents will see a DECREASE in their utility bill!

What do I do with my old trash cans?
Unfortunately, with the new service the only receptacles that can be picked up are the issued carts. You may still use your existing trash cans at your home, but the automated trucks will no longer be able to empty them.  If you want to dispose of an old trash can, you can place it inside the new cart.

What do I do with my small blue recycling bin?
The small blue recycling bins were picked up the last two weeks of July, 2012 by Republic Services.  If you still have yours and would like to have it picked up, please call Republic Services at (361) 882-1878.

What if I am unable to push the new larger carts around?
Republic Services can help you if you are unable to move your cart due to a bona fide health issue.  Please contact the Utility Billing Department (361) 777-4500 to help you make arrangements.

Is there anything we cannot put in the trash carts?
Paint, hazardous home chemicals, tires, or any amount of items that exceeds 250 lbs in total weight are NOT allowed in the trash carts.

What time do we have to put the carts out by?
To make sure that your carts are serviced, please be sure they are placed curbside no later than 8:00 AM on your regular pick up days.

What happens if my cart is defective or broken?
If your cart has damaged wheels, lid, or has a crack/hole in the body that allows seepage, please contact Public Works at (361) 777-4601 to request a new cart. Asking for excessive cart replacements within one year and/or damage caused by negligence can result in a replacement fee.
