Application Information

The Portland Police Department conducts hiring rounds when openings are created. Applications are accepted only during specified periods.  During an active hiring round, applications can be downloaded and dropped off at the Police Department or mailed..

Hiring Process
When a position becomes available, applications are accepted for a specified period of time, unless otherwise stated. When a deadline is published, applicants must complete the application and return all required paperwork before the deadline. Applicants may be required to take a general knowledge written exam testing the applicant’s ability to observe, reason and communicate. Applicants may also be required to take a polygraph exam.

  • Preliminary background investigation        
  • Oral interview board
  • Complete Personal History Statement
  • Comprehensive background investigation conducted
  • Physical exam, psychological exam and drug testing

Police Officers            

  • Submit Application and Personal History Statement        
  • Preliminary background investigation
  • Oral interview board
  • Comprehensive background investigation conducted
  • Physical exam, psychological exam and drug testing

 


Salaries After Introductory Period
Communications Officers (Dispatchers)  $17.55 hr / $36,504 annual
Police Officers $21.32 hr / $44,345 annual

Various incentive pays for education and certifications.
