Driving Safety Course
Qualifications & Requirements
If you are charged with a traffic offense under the Transportation Code, you may request to take a driving safety course, if you meet the following certain qualifications:  
  • You cannot be charged with:
    • Failing to remain at the scene of an accident
    • Overtaking and passing a school bus
    • Speeding 25 or more miles over the limit
  • You cannot have a commercial driver's license
  • You must have proof of financial responsibility
  • You must possess a valid Texas driver's license

If you decide to request driving safety course, you will need to provide the court with the following items: 
  • Copy of a valid Texas driver's license
  • Pay court costs plus a $10 fee
  • Plea of nolo contendere or guilty
  • Proof of financial responsibility

Course Certificate
You will be allowed 90 days to take the course and return your certificate to this court. You are required to attend a course that has been approved by the Texas Education Agency. If you do not provide this court with proof of successful completion, the court will send you a notice requiring you to return to court to show cause why you did not show proof of completion.

If you show good cause why you did not provide your proof within the period, the judge may, but is not required to, grant you an extension. Failure to appear at the hearing may result in a warrant for your arrest being issued and/or your case being referred to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) for denial of the renewal of your driver's license.
